Fox Spring Music is a music production and mixing business founded in Edinburgh, Scotland by myself, Alasdair Easton. The business itself is new, being founded in 2022, but I've been involved in music and music production for many years. In fact music and tech has been a big part of my life since my 80's schooldays when I got my ZX Spectrum and, later, a cheap and terrible drum machine that plugged into the back of it. That was me off and running.
Along the way I became a bass player, a guitarist and a drummer. I am catastrophic on keyboards (but it's amazing what you can do with MIDI editing software!).
My real passion though is for mixing. For years I fought the urge to dive in deep, thinking it was just a seductive distraction from composing and playing, but it kept calling to me. Eventually I thought "Why am I resisting this?" and went all-in on mixing. Good decision and here we are.
THE NOTES ARE ONLY HALF THE MAGIC
The way I see it, in music, the notes are only half the magic. What I mean is there are two parts to experiencing music: there's the musical content, like notes, rhythms, harmonies and lyrics; and second, there's the actual sound itself. For example are the drums deep and punchy? Do they have controlled, focussed power or are they raucous, trashy and exuberant? Is the bass wiry or fat? Is it deep and satisfying or edgy and threatening? The pure enjoyment of sound itself and the emotions it evokes have always been at least half the fun for me.
But both parts need the other: the notes can't exist without sound, and the sounds don't make any sense without notes to play. The challenge is in mixing these two worlds, the music and the sonics, so that each enhances the other and the combination carries the emotion and power the artist intended. At times the job is really creative and at times intensely technical. It takes a love of music and a love of "technical stuff". Which is right where I began, trying to make music with my ZX Spectrum and my terrible drum machine in 1984.
Along the way, playing in bands, writing, producing and recording with others, I've deepened my understanding of music and the creative struggle that bands and artists are engaged in. I've also discovered an obsession for the techniques and the technology of mixing.
Finally, I've been around on the planet long enough to know the value of professionalism and the joy of working with people who care deeply about doing a great job. I aim to be that guy every time.
